How to Save Twitter GIFs to Camera Roll on Android
How to Save Twitter GIFs to Camera Roll on Android
Android makes downloading Twitter videos much easier than iPhone — but there are still a few steps you need to follow to get the file into your gallery. This guide covers everything, including why Twitter GIFs download as MP4 files and how to fix that if needed.
Why Twitter GIFs Are Actually MP4 Files
Before we start, one important fact: what looks like a GIF on Twitter is not actually a GIF file. X (formerly Twitter) automatically converts every uploaded GIF into a silent looping MP4 when it's stored on their servers. MP4 is up to 90% smaller than raw GIF format — that's why X uses it at scale.
So when you download a "GIF" from Twitter, you'll receive an MP4 file. It plays exactly like a GIF on every Android device and app. If you specifically need a true .gif file, read our guide on how to convert Twitter video to GIF.
What You Need
- Any Android phone (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, etc.)
- Chrome browser (or any Android browser)
- A public tweet URL containing a GIF or video
- TwtVideoDownloader — free, no signup
Step-by-Step: Save Twitter GIFs to Android
Step 1 — Find the Tweet
Open the X app or go to x.com in Chrome. Find the tweet with the GIF or video you want to save.
Only public tweets can be downloaded. For information on private accounts, see our guide on downloading private Twitter videos.
Step 2 — Copy the Tweet URL
In the X app: Tap the Share icon below the tweet → tap "Copy link"
In Chrome browser: Copy the URL from the address bar after opening the tweet, or tap the Share icon → Copy link.
Your URL will look like:
https://x.com/username/status/1234567890123456789
Step 3 — Go to TwtVideoDownloader
Open Chrome and navigate to twtvideodownloader.com.
Step 4 — Paste and Download
Tap the input box, paste your tweet URL, and tap "Download Video."
The tool processes your link in 2–5 seconds.
Step 5 — Choose Quality and Save
Select your preferred quality — 720p or 1080p Full HD. The file will download automatically to your Downloads folder.
A notification will appear at the top of your screen when the download is complete.
Step 6 — Find the File in Your Gallery
Open your Gallery app (or Google Photos) → tap Albums → tap Downloads. Your video will be there.
On Samsung devices: Gallery → Albums → Download. On Pixel devices: Google Photos → Library → Downloads.
How to Move the Video to Your Main Gallery
If you want the video in your main camera roll rather than the Downloads album:
- Open Files by Google (or your file manager)
- Go to Downloads
- Long press the video → tap Move
- Select DCIM → Camera
The video will now appear in your main gallery alongside your photos.
Troubleshooting — Android Issues
Download not starting? Make sure Chrome has storage permission. Go to Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Storage → Allow.
Can't find the file? Open Files by Google → tap Browse → Downloads. The file will be there even if it doesn't appear in Gallery immediately.
Video plays but no sound? Twitter GIFs are silent by design — they're looping video clips with no audio track.
